6/20/17 Tuesday Ride, West Simsbury or Hillfest...your choice

The Tuesday B Pace ride will still take place out of West Simsbury, but will not have a posted route. Call it 'old school' riding. Leave as a group, and come back as a group. Jim Newton, Sr. will plan something good to enjoy this last day of spring.

IN ADDITION...if you're up for it, Jan will be leading the Tuesday Hillfest ride departing from Canton High School at 5:30PM. 35.5 miles and 4000' of climbing. That map is posted on the Hillfest thread.

Happy and safe riding! Jan

I will plan to join the HillFest, but may cut out early after the Steele road climb.

Thanks for the update Jan; I'll try to stay with the old school group, and hope they don't try to out-do the hill climbers.

Alan Grant said there was a report of LifeStar call on 219 this eve. Does anyone know what happened? I was with Jamie to the top of Steele - he went on solo, I rode back down Steel & caught up with most of the crew.

Amanda,

I ended up aborting partway up Ratlum and came back down 219 to find the other side blocked off. I don't know what happened. I had observed the same older gentleman, who was briefly with us on 44, descending 219.

Hope whomever was involved will be ok.

I later encountered a large bear that ran across 179 South of 44.

From Amigos forum: Amigos, I just wanted to let everyone know that we all lost a wonderful friend, father, husband, and fellow bike rider tonight in New Hartford. I raced with Gordon quite a few times, trained regularly with him, and traveled some great distances with him. He truly loved the sport of triathlon, was damn fast racer, and was a pretty damn good coach. Please keep his wife Allison, and two young children in your prayers. Be safe out there.

It sounds like a driver turned left into his path. Very sad.

I am glad to know that the Tuesday ride out of West Simsbury went well. Thanks Jim for helping while I was out suffering on the Hillfest ride.

As some of you may be aware, there was another senseless loss of a cyclist within our community. It saddens me so, and leaves me with an empty feeling for his family. We know him through our town of Canton, as a customer, as a friend, as a coach and someone very dedicated to the sport of triathlon. Gordon was a father of 2 young children and husband. This is the second loss of someone close within a five week period of time. I ask you to be diligent in respectful riding, visibility and safety. Later I will share another message to that regard...but please ride with awareness and anticipation of others, including fellow cycists and motorists.

In closing, I will say when I returned home last night from a great ride, I was immediately aware of the unfortunate accident. I was torn with fear that it might have been one of the EBCC riders on Hillfest. All riders were accounted for, having seen them in the parking lot...accept for one that had turned off early. I did make sure he made it safely home by going to his house at 10pm and knocking until someone came to the door. Relief followed...but sadness remained.

Through this experience, I will be posting my cell phone number so any rider can text me of their safe arrival home following a group ride with me. Please use my number with respect. View my profile as an EBCC member. This is important to me, especially when someone turns off early or, for some reason or another, is separated from the group.

Thanks and continue to ride safely! Jan
